Direct and Terrestrial Vegetation-mediated Effects of Environmental Change on Aquatic Ecosystem Processes
نویسندگان
چکیده
Global environmental changes have direct effects on aquatic ecosystems, as well as indirect effects through alterations of adjacent terrestrial ecosystem structure and functioning. For example, shifts in terrestrial vegetation communities resulting from global changes can affect the quantity and quality of water, organic matter, and nutrient inputs to aquatic ecosystems. The relative importance of these direct and terrestrial-vegetationmediated effects is largely unknown, but understanding them is essential to our ability to predict the consequences of global changes for aquatic ecosystems. Here, we present a conceptual framework for considering the relative strengths of these effects and use case studies from xeric, wet and temperate, and boreal ecosystems to demonstrate that the responses of aquatic ecosystems to drivers of global changes may not be evident when the pathways are studied separately. Future studies examining changes in aquatic ecosystem structure and functioning should consider the relative contributions of both direct and terrestrial-vegetation-mediated effects of global changes.

The relative influences of climate and catchment processeson Holocene lake development in glaciated regions
Following deglaciation, the long-term pattern of change in diatom communities and the inferred history of the aquatic environment are affected by a hierarchy of environmental controls. These include direct climate impacts on a lake’s thermal and hydrologic budgets, aswell as the indirect affects of climate on catchment processes, such as weathering, soil development, microbial activity, fire, a...

Northern lakes are displaying widespread ecological reorganizations in response to global change. These sensitive freshwater ecosystems are an integral component of subarctic and arctic landscapes and play a critical role in regional and global biogeochemical cycles. A myriad of direct and indirect climate drivers shape their structure and functioning, often matched by equally diverse ecosystem...

Climate change modulates the effects of solar UV radiation on biogeochemical cycles in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, particularly for carbon cycling, resulting in UV-mediated positive or negative feedbacks on climate. Possible positive feedbacks discussed in this assessment include: (i) enhanced UVinduced mineralisation of above ground litter due to aridification; (ii) enhanced UV-induced...

Nitrogen (N) cycling in terrestrial ecosystems is a global environmental concern. The N cycle is a complex interplay where biotic and abiotic processes interact to transform and transfer N in an ecosystem. In general, one can simplify by classifying terrestrial N cycles all over the world in two groups: ‘tight’ N cycles and ‘open’ N cycles. The ‘tight’ N cycle is characterized by its high effic...

Ecosystem functioning is one of the most striking topics in ecological research. All human beings depend on the functioning of ecosystems and the services provided by ecosystems [1]. Ecosystem services provide food from e.g. agriculture and fish as well as clean water and air. Thus, the functioning of ecosystems is a crucial topic of experimental studies in ecology. The first known ecological e...
